A common misconception relating to DUI law is that a golf-cart is not a car, and therefore you cannot get a DUI in a golf-cart. This, however, is false. Many beach communities such as Bald Head Island, NC enforce all traffic laws.  So what are some best practices for driving golf carts?

  1. Driving a golf cart after drinking is no different than driving any other motor vehicle. If you are on Bald Head Island, or if you are considering a quick cruise to the beach in your golf cart, think twice before doing so after drinking alcohol. After you’ve received a DUI on a golf cart, be sure to hire a lawyer immediately because it is important to begin building the strongest defense possible.
  1. Equipment must be operative. The laws of North Carolina require headlights and taillights. A broken headlight on a golf cart is no different than a broken headlight on your car and carries the same fines and court costs when you get a ticket. Make sure your golf cart is in good working condition before using it.
  1. Speed limits apply to all vehicles. Cars, golf carts, and mopeds are all the same in the eyes of the law. In Brunswick County, even a few miles per hour over the posted speed limit can result in a day in court, court costs and fines, and as many as 3 points on your license, which can raise your car insurance premiums by 40% or more! Keep in mind that you can also receive a ticket for “Reckless Endangerment” on a golf cart.
  1. Licensing, Registering, and Insuring. One way to get a hefty fine is to allow your minor children to drive a golf cart. North Carolina requires golf cart drivers to be at least 16 years old to drive on public roads. Be mindful that the streets that lead to the beach, and especially all the roads on Bald Head Island are public roads. Also, keep in mind, as of July 1, 2016, mopeds must be registered and insured.

As silly as it may seem, the laws that apply to motor vehicles are all applied to golf carts and mopeds. So enjoy your vacation and drive safe!
